Grove set for 1,334-length swimming marathon

Former Warriors and Scotland centre Alex Grove will prepare to swim the English Channel later this year by swimming 1,334 lengths of the swimming pool at the David Lloyd Health Centre at Sixways next week.

Grove will attempt the 21-mile swim from Dover to Cap Gris Nez on August 1 to raise money for Warriors’ charity partner Acorns Children’s Hospice.

The 32-year-old is now training hard for his fund-raiser and will use the indoor swim on Wednesday February 5 to help raise awareness of his challenge and the work that Acorns do.

Grove will spend 11 hours in the swimming pool with the 1,334 lengths being the equivalent of the distance he will swim across the English Channel.

The lengths will be logged on a Garmin device and Grove will be allowed to interrupt next week’s swim for refreshment and comfort breaks.

But when he tackles the Channel in August, Grove will have to swim non-stop and will not be allowed to make contact with the support boat or have physical contact with any members of his support team.
