MATCH REPORT | WARRIORS U18S 65-5 YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE U18s

Warriors Under-18s booked their place at Finals Day with a comprehensive 65-5 victory over Yorkshire Carnegie at Sixways.

Warriors dotted down 11-times, the wings in devastating try-scoring form with Alex Evans and Tobi Wilson helping themselves to a hat-trick apiece, while there were further scores from Jack Forsythe, Finn Morgan, James Mann and a brace from Tom Miles.

Warriors finished second in the Northern Conference and will now face Saracens, runners-up in the Southern Conference, in the opening match at Finals Day at Sixways on Sunday February 16 (kick-off 12.00pm).

A quick-fire double from Wilson and Mann put Warriors 10-0 up with just six minutes on the clock, Wilson finishing off arguably the try of the afternoon to get the hosts up and running. Scrum-half Ollie Wyn was the catalyst, breaking Carnegie’s defensive line before feeding the impressive Forsythe on the charge, who in turn moved the ball wide to Wilson for the first score.

Two minutes later, Mann scythed over in the same corner to double his side’s lead and give the Yorkshireman much to ponder early on. To their credit, the visitors responded in positive fashion on 11 minutes, Jack Cherry collecting a neat kick in behind Warriors’ defence to cross in the corner.

On 16 minutes Evans crossed for the first of his three tries thanks to patient build-up play upfront to get the hosts within a whisker of Carnegie’s try-line. A series of marauding carries from hooker Joe Richardson laid the platform, before Smith’s clever offload unleashed Evans to the line. Smith got his kicking ratio off the ground with a successful conversion to increase Warriors’ advantage to 17-5.

Forsythe, who has had a barn-storming campaign in Three Pears Academy jersey, secured the try bonus point for Warriors on 18 minutes, prior to Evans’ second of the afternoon. The flyer racked up his hat-trick with half-time looking – quick thinking from half-back Wynn providing the opening for Evans to dot down. Smith’s conversion gave Warriors a 36-5 interval lead.

Wilson registered his second try of the day eight minutes into the second period as the Warriors backs lined up on the near side to take advantage of a three-man overlap. Warriors notched up try number-eight on 46 minutes, this time Miles scooted in under the posts to make it 48-5 following Smith’s successful conversion.

Miles then made it a Sixways double for himself, powering over in the far corner to extend his side’s lead to 53-5 going into the final quarter. Morgan added further gloss to the scoreline, escaping the attention of a scrambling Yorkshire defensive line to push his way over the line, before Wilson celebrated his hat-trick with the last play of the match. Smith added the extras to end the game 65-5 to Warriors.
