Weir in Scotland squad for Italian job

Duncan Weir will start for Scotland in their European Nations Cup match against Italy in Florence on Saturday.

Warriors’ fly-half will win his 29th international cap in Scotland’s tournament opener but will make his first start for his country since March 2016.

Injuries to Adam Hastings and Finn Russell and impressive form for Warriors have given Weir the opportunity to win his second cap since he arrived at Sixways from Edinburgh two years ago with his first coming as a replacement against France at Murrayfield in last season’s interrupted Six Nations in March.

Weir is one of four changes made by Scotland Head Coach Gregor Townsend to the side that beat Wales two weeks ago.

“While we gained confidence from the win over Wales, we have been working hard to improve in all areas of our game, and we believe that there is a lot more to come from this group of players,” said Townsend.

“The energy has been great at training and we are seeing real competition for places throughout our squad.

“It’s exciting to be a part of this new competition, and also to play in Florence for the first time.”

Weir, 29, has good memories of playing against Italy, having kicked a last-ditch drop-goal to secure a 21-20 Six Nations victory in 2014.

Saturday’s match at Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence kicks off at 12.45pm GMT and will be shown live on Amazon Prime Video.
