Lawrence to start for England against Georgia

Ollie Lawrence will make his first start for England in Saturday’s Autumn Nations Cup opener against Georgia at Twickenham.

Centre Lawrence became the sixth player to win an England cap with Warriors when he came off the bench to help secure the 2020 Guinness Six Nations crown with victory over Italy in Rome two weeks ago.

He has now been promoted to the starting XV and will partner Henry Slade of Exeter Chiefs with Jonathan Joseph, who started in the centre against Italy, switching to the wing.

“We’ve had a really good week of training.  We know there are a lot of expectations on us and we’ve applied ourselves hard and put a lot of pressure on ourselves in the early part of this week,” said England Head Coach Eddie Jones.

“Georgia will be a tough opponent, so we have a team with some real power in midfield.  We have a good mix of youth and experience across the squad and they are completely focused on putting in an excellent performance on Saturday.

“We’re looking forward to being back at our home at Twickenham, we are humbled by the opportunity and want to give people a reason to smile during such a tough time for the country.”

England have met – and beaten – Georgia twice before in pool matches at the 2003 and 2011 Rugby World Cups.

There will be a familiar face for Lawrence among Georgia’s new coaching team in Neil Doak, who left his role as Warriors Backs and Attack Coach during the summer.

Saturday’s match, which kicks off at 3pm, will be played behind closed doors due to COVID-19 lockdown regulations but will be shown live on Amazon Prime Video.
