Three more re-signings for Warriors Women

Warriors Women trio Akina Gondwe, Abi Kershaw and Vicky Foxwell have all signed contract extensions at Sixways Stadium as the new Allianz Premier 15s campaign looms large.

They join a whole host of players to have re-signed with the club and will be keen to be involved in this Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Bristol Bears.

“Akina is a fantastic addition to our squad, Abi has come through our pathway here at Worcester and Vicky is one of the most talented rugby players that I’ve come across,” Sian Moore, Warriors Women’s Attack and Backs Coach said of all three players.

“Having seen her sat on the side-line for the majority of last season, we are really excited to have Akina back fit and in contention for selection.

“She has worked tirelessly to get herself through a long rehab process and that is a true example of how driven she is. Her knowledge of the game is impressive and she’s a modern-day prop, who has power and pace to threaten any defender as well as strong technical detail at the set-piece.

“In terms of Abi, it’s hard to believe that last season was only her first time playing at senior level and we couldn’t be more pleased for her.

“She has an impressive skillset that is well beyond her years, and we excited for her to continue her development here at Warriors.

“Vicky has been working really hard throughout pre-season, making her a more rounded player – it’s great to keep her here at Sixways.”

Gondwe, who has nine England Under-20 caps to her name, recently graduated from the University of Worcester with a degree in Geography and is currently studying an MSc in International Sport Management.

“I’m super happy to have signed up for this season after spending most of last season recovering from injury,” said Gondwe, who made her return as a second half replacement in Warriors’ penultimate 2020/21 fixture at Harlequins.

“The club were amazing throughout the process last season and I’m really excited going into the new season.”

Exciting full-back Kershaw made her senior debut at Saracens on the opening day of last season and had an impressive maiden campaign for Jo Yapp’s side.

The Shropshire-born flyer wowed onlookers with her ability to break the line at speed – her 50-metre dash into Quins’ 22 during the home fixture in December 2020 the hallmark of her game.

“I’m really excited for the upcoming season and I can’t wait to see what this season will bring,” added Kershaw.

After playing mostly football as a child, Foxwell cut her rugby playing teeth at Filton Academy and went on to play for Somerset Under-18s and for Gloucester at senior level.

Joining Bristol Ladies aged 17, Foxwell made her Premier 15s debut for the West Country club where she made a series of appearances before making the switch to Warriors ahead of the 2018/19 season.

“I’m really happy to continue my journey with Worcester Warriors,” said Foxwell.

“It’s always an exciting time ahead of a new season and I can’t wait to get stuck in.”
