Van der Merwe impresses in Scotland defeat

Warriors wing Duhan van der Merwe impressed but could not save Scotland from a 30-15 defeat by World champions South Africa at Murrayfield.

Van der Merwe featured prominently in Scotland’s two tries, both scored by Stuart Hogg, and was a constant menace to South Africa’s defence.

South Africa scored only two tries but they punished Scotland for conceding penalties under pressure with Elton Jantjies, Handre Pollard and Francois Steyn kicking six between them.

Van der Merwe popped up twice in the move that set up Hogg’s first try, first collecting Finn Russell’s crossfield kick, then slipping a scoring pass to Hogg for his second.

It was van der Merwe’s 12th cap for Scotland and his second as a Warriors player following a summer move from Edinburgh Rugby.
