Warriors pair help Scotland retain Calcutta Cup

Warriors pair Duhan van der Merwe and Rory Sutherland helped Scotland to retain the Calcutta Cup with a 20-17 victory over England at Murrayfield in their Guinness Six Nations opener.

Wing van der Merwe and loosehead prop Sutherland both featured prominently in a gritty performance from Scotland who clinched victory with a penalty from Finn Russell after they had levelled at 17-17 with penalty try, awarded after England hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie deliberately palmed the ball into touch to deny Darcy Graham a try.

It was the first time since 1984 that Scotland had won successive Calcutta Cups.

Van der Merwe played the full match while Sutherland put in a huge shift for the first 52 minutes of a pulsating contest.
