Disappointment for van der Merwe and Sutherland in Cardiff

Warriors pair Duhan van der Merwe and Rory Sutherland suffered disappointment as Scotland’s hopes of a Guinness Six Nations Grand Slam were ended by a 20-17 defeat by Wales in Cardiff.

Wing van der Merwe started but had few opportunities to impress in his 16th international appearance and 13th for Scotland. He played all but the final minute before he was replaced by Cameron Redpath.

Loosehead prop Sutherland won his 20th cap, and 18th for Scotland, came off the bench after 44 minutes but suffered a rib injury 18 minutes later and had to be replaced.

A drop goal from Dan Biggar ten minutes from time clinched Wales’ win, their 11th in a row in Cardiff.

With no Six Nations matches next weekend both van der Merwe and Sutherland are scheduled to be available for Warriors’ Gallagher Premiership match against Bristol Bears at Sixways on Friday (kick-off 7.45pm).
