Match Report | Yorkshire Rugby Academy 22-29 Warriors Under-18s

Warriors Under-18s snatched a dramatic last-gasp win to see off tenacious opponents in dreadful weather conditions at Castle Park in Doncaster.

It meant that Warriors ended the group phase of the Premiership Rugby Under-18 Academy Northern Conference with an even record of three wins and three defeats.

It looked like being a draw in a match that see-sawed throughout but a brilliant individual try from centre Will Pugh (Stourport HS and Luctonians) who broke from inside his own half clinched the bonus point win.

Yorkshire had only just levelled the scores with an unconverted try after wing Oli Smith (Hartpury College and Abergavenny) had edged Warriors in front at 22-17 with a try that Dan Chambers (Stourport HS and Wolverhampton) improved.

Warriors had taken an early lead with a try from loosehead prop Lewys Walsh (Hartpury College and Aberdare) but they went into the break seven points down after Yorkshire scored two tries, one of them converted.

Warriors reduced the deficit to two points when left wing Alex Wills (Hartpury College and Worcester) powered over for an unconverted try but Yorkshire replied with a try of their own.

Warriors hit back with a well-worked try that was finished by Jacob Clarke (Bishop Vesey’s GS and Lichfield) and although the conversion was missed in difficult conditions for the kickers, the try put them back within striking distance and on course for the win.

Warriors Under-18s will now compete in the competition’s Finals Day at Sixways on Sunday February 27 against opponents to be decided.
