Thompson & Matthews start for England

Lydia Thompson and Alex Matthews are in England’s starting line-up for this Sunday’s TikTok Women’s Six Nations trip to Italy (kick-off 3pm UK time).

Their selection means that Warriors Women have nine players involved in this weekend’s Six Nations.

Jo Yapp’s side have seven players involved in the Wales versus Scotland clash in Cardiff tomorrow (kick-off 4.45pm). Carys Phillips, a try-scorer in last week’s pulsating 27-19 victory over Ireland, starts for Wales alongside tenacious back-row Alex Callender, while Sioned Harries and scrum-half Ffion Lewis are among the replacements for the women in red.

It will be an emotional day for Lana Skeldon, who wins her 50th Scotland cap. The Hawick-born native starts at hooker, with fellow club teammates Caity Mattinson and Lyndsay O’Donnell on the bench. Lisa Cockburn misses out after sustaining a knee injury during the opening weekend defeat to England in Edinburgh.

“It was pleasing to see our internationals performing so well on the opening weekend of the Six Nations last week, and I’m sure they will do even better in Round 2,” said Warriors Women Attack and Backs Coach Sian Moore.

“This weekend will be the first time that two of our players have faced each other directly in an international and the battle between Lana and Carys will be great to watch.

“It’s also fantastic to see Lydia in the Red Roses team and a special mention to Caity Mattinson, who will hopefully make her Six Nations bow with Scotland.

“Abi Kershaw will feature for England U20s this weekend too, her third successive outing for the team and we wish her well.”
