Highlights & Report | Wasps 41-12 Worcester Warriors

This was a game of opportunities, taken by Wasps but missed by Warriors which skewed the final scoreline.

Warriors spent long periods in Wasps’ territory but had only two second half tries from Harri Doel and Ted Hill to show for their efforts while Wasps were clinical from their more limited attacking opportunities and scored six tries.

It was game on at 15-7 when Doel scored eight minutes into the second half, but over five minutes later when lock Elliott Stooke drove over after Warriors had given away a free kick followed by two penalties almost from the restart.

Hill’s try nine minutes from time gave Warriors a chance of returning home with at least a point but Wasps scored twice in the final two minutes to dash those hopes and distorted the final scoreline.

In the first half prop Tom West drove over for the opening try after just five minutes but Warriors then enjoyed a 20 minute period of dominance in which they created a number of opportunities that they could not quite finish.

Billy Searle was off target with a penalty attempt and instead it was Wasps who extended their lead with a penalty from Jimmy Gopperth followed by a well-worked try from wing Josh Bassett who powered over nine minutes before the break.

Doel’s try, after another period of sustained pressure, and Searle’s conversion from the touchline brought Warriors into the game but Stooke’s try, closely followed by the bonus point try from replacement hooker Gabriel Oghre slammed the door shut.

Hill, who worked tirelessly at number eight, and centre Oli Morris gave Wasps plenty to think about but Warriors’ set piece, which was solid for three-quarters of the match, creaked in the final 20 minutes.

Oghre was driven over from close range for his second try with a minute left on the clock and there was still time for Wasps to add another try.

Warriors tried to run the ball from their own line but ran into trouble as Seb Atkinson was tackled in the in-goal area, the ball rolled loose and Tom Willis dotted down for a soft try which just about summed up the afternoon.
