Warriors Women duo get World Sevens call

Jade Shekells and Caity Mattinson will both be in action at the Toulouse leg of the HSBC World Sevens Series this weekend.

Shekells, a try-scorer for Warriors Women during Saturday’s 51-26 victory over Sale Sharks, is part of the England squad, while Mattinson will represent Scotland.

England have been drawn in Pool C alongside Ireland, France and Brazil. England Head Coach James Rodwell said: “After a very tight turnaround from Langford where a number of players went back to play for their clubs in the Allianz Premier 15s it’s another opportunity for the group to pull on an England shirt in Toulouse for the final tournament of the season.

“Maisy Allen has really impressed since coming in in January and has been brilliant in camp. It’s great she has the opportunity to pull on an England shirt and we’re excited to see what she can do.

“Jess Weaver is another new cap. She’s been in with the wider squad since January and this is her opportunity to perform on the World Series. She has great energy and pace around the set piece and at nine. We’re excited to see what the new debutants can do.

“Unfortunately we lost Grace Crompton over the weekend so Georgina Tasker replaces her within the squad who featured in the first two legs of this calendar year in Spain. We’re excited to see her get back in the shirt.

“This tournament is vital for our preparation for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. It’s all about learning and growing on and off the field for this young group. It’s about building for the future.”

Meanwhile, Scotland feature on the sevens circuit for only the second time, with each member of the squad having represented Bryan Easson’s side at the recent TikTok Women’s Six Nations.

Scotland Head Coach Scott Forrest said: “In such an important year for women’s rugby, with the Commonwealth Games on the horizon, being able to compete in Toulouse on the HSBC World Sevens Series provides some excellent preparation for us.

“It is only the second time that Scotland have played a part in the series, but we have a good amount of experience in the squad and I’m confident that we can go to France and give a good account of ourselves.”
