Warriors AASE march on with fifth straight win

Warriors AASE side Worcester Sixth Form College marched to their fifth successive victory as they defeated Yorkshire Carnegie’s Bishop Burton College 31-17 on Wednesday.

Played in wet and windy conditions at Bishop Burton College, a tense affair saw Worcester outmuscle their Yorkshire opponents, with the result ensuring they have claimed maximum points in every game so far this season in the AASE League North Group.

Worcester took the lead within a few minutes when Oliver Gould bounced off two tackles and then sprinted round the full-back to score under the posts and Kai Lucas-Dumolo converted.

Huge defensive efforts from Lamaar Lawrence and Lewis Belton then caused panic in the opposition half-backs which in turn led to a charged down kick that was pounced on by Teddy Taylor who gathered to score under the posts with Lucas-Dumolo converting once again.

The rest of the first-half saw a resurgent Bishop Burton apply pressure to the Worcester tryline resulting into two yellow cards for an accumulation of team penalties. Down to 13 men, the Worcester side battled on, but were unable to withstand the pressure as Bishop Burton scored two tries to make it 14-10 at the break.

The second-half started with the Yorkshire outfit again camped in the Worcester half, but despite the hosts’ numerical advantage, Charlie Gamble found some space and left the opposition defence for dead, scoring in the corner against the run of play.

With the Worcester team now back to their full quota of players, they got themselves back on the front foot, after strong carries from George Parker and Jamie White made space for Will Blackmore to snipe from the base of a ruck to score.

Bishop Burton responded quickly after with pressure to the Worcester scrum resulting in them scoring and converting to make the score 26-17.

However, Worcester had the final say, closing out the game with a try from Belton, after he powerfully carried two defenders over the line to secure the win.

Warriors AASE Manager Ryan Watkins said: “I’m incredibly proud of the lads today. It was a tough physical contest and a four-hour bus trip can be a mental battle in itself.

“But I thought our skills in contact were exceptional and something the lads are really priding themselves on.”

Worcester Sixth Form’s next match sees them host Newcastle Falcons’ Gosforth Academy at Nunnery Wood Sports Complex on Wednesday 18 October in their last league game before the play-offs.

A win for either side could mean they top the North Group.
